Exploring the World (without leaving Seattle)
The school year is wrapping up - not only for UW students, but for students of all ages. All year long, FIUTS students had the opportunity to connect with elementary schools around the Seattle area. Through our pen pal program, Global Ambassador Days, and after-school programs including Ichi Uno One and Explore the World, local kids had many meaningful opportunities to learn about the world from international visitors from across the globe.
UW student Xiaojuan Li (otherwise known as Emily) wrote about her experience visiting Schmitz Park Elementary in May:
"It was a wonderful and unforgettable experience to join in this activity to introduce our country's culture as a Global Ambassador. I was so excited that so many elementary students were interested in China and Chinese culture. In our class, we shared Chinese food, famous landmarks, Chinese traditional knots, Kung Fu, and Taiji Quan with them through beautiful pictures and videos. We also taught them how to say "Mom, I love you" in Chinese, because last Sunday was Mother's Day. And we taught them Chinese paper cutting hand by hand. It was interesting.
"We had a wonderful afternoon with the students. And it was a significant way to know each other. Thanks again that you gave me this chance."
Our visit to Schmitz Park Elementary was also featured in the West Seattle Blog.
