Award Descriptions:

Shigemura Award for International Understanding

This is the oldest of the FIUTS awards named in honor of Frank Shigemura, a Japanese-American student who served in the US armed services in WWII.  He was killed in combat while his parents were being held in a US internment camp in this country.  Despite ample reasons for bitterness, Frank Shigemura’s parents established this award in his honor.  Since 1951, FIUTS has presented the Shigemura Award annually to an outstanding American student, community member or organization deemed to have been especially instrumental in promoting international understanding.

Gordon Sweany Award

This award is in honor of Gordon H. Sweany, President of SAFECO Corporation for many years.  It is awarded annually to a UW faculty or staff member who has done the most to support Internationals and international education in the previous year.

FIUTS Lifetime Achievement Award The Lifetime Achievement Award provides permanent recognition to a FIUTS volunteer, group, or organization who has been instrumental in building the organization, providing key leadership and loyal service through many years.  These special recipients represent the FIUTS mission of service to promote mutual understanding between the international community at the University of Washington and the people of the Pacific Northwest.  This award is presented to a former staff member, community volunteer, host or UW faculty or staff who has contributed significantly to FIUTS and to the International student population over the course of their lifetime.

Elizabeth Gould Award The award, established in 1969, is given to an international student who has demonstrated a commitment to furthering the cause of global citizenship and international understanding and strengthening FIUTS mission to inspire cross-cultural engagement on campus.

James M. Davis Award James M. Davis was the first Executive Director of FIUTS from 1948-1954.  This award is to be presented annually to a domestic student who has demonstrated a commitment to furthering the cause of international understanding and cross-cultural engagement on campus and in the FIUTS community.
