Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition (GSEC)
The Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition (GSEC) is a business plan competition in which students from around the world find creative, commercially sustainable ways to address problems of poverty in the developing world. Participants are selected from a large pool of applicants to come to Seattle for GSEC Week, during which they present their business plans and compete for monetary prizes that they use to put their business ideas into action.
2014 Hosting Dates
GSEC 2014 will take place from February 24-28. The homestays will begin one or two days before the start of the competition, and will end one or two days after the competition is over, depending on individual students' travel plans. Prospective hosts should plan to be available between approximately February 22 and March 2.
About the Participants
Participants are undergraduate and graduate level students from universities around the world, both male and female. Participants have been selected from a competitive pool of applicants. Some participants have not traveled to the United States before.
Requirements for Hosting
Hosts must be located within a one hour commute to the University of Washington and be close to public transportation, as students will use public transportation to get to and from activities, sometimes late in the evening. Hosts should be able to provide a private sleeping space for their guest(s) and provide meals to students when they are together. Hosts should have a tolerance for late night work on the part of the student, as students may be perfecting their presentations after receiving feedback during the first part of GSEC week.
Number of Participants per Household
Hosts are welcome to host one to three students. Students hosted in pairs must be same sex and can share a room but not a bed.
The daily participant schedule for GSEC 2014 is available on the GSEC website here.
Host Events and Activities
All FIUTS hosts are invited to attend our annual Community Barbecue and International Welcome Night in September, as well as community events throughout the year.
