Seattle Language & Culture Institute: Day Program
The Seattle Language and Culture Institute is an opportunity for middle and high school students to take part in a two-week global experience (July 24-August 4) on the University of Washington campus in Seattle, Washington. The SLCI is a powerful way for students to build cultural competency, practice communication and diplomacy skills, make friends from around the world, and become not just global citizens, but global leaders.
Global Leadership class participants will take part in morning sessions focused on leadership, international awareness, and cross cultural topics. English Language class participants will spend the morning in interactive classes focused on speaking and listening skills. Afternoon excursions bring both groups together to inspire sharing and cultural exchange while enjoying Seattle and the Puget Sound region.
In addition to daily activities, students will also take part in a two-day, one-night camp experience from Thursday, July 27-Friday, July 28 and visit Mount Rainier with international participants.
As part of a cohort of young people from around the world learning alongside one another, students in the Seattle Language and Culture Institute will develop deep cultural awareness, global perspective, and enduring friendships with other youth around the world.

The Seattle Language and Culture Institute welcomes up to 80 international and domestic participants. Students should be entering 8th-11th grade (ages 13-17).
Students may choose to participate in either the Global Leadership course or the English Language course. Global Leadership course participants should be fluent speakers of English.
Day program tuition: $550 per student
All lunches, transportation, entry fees, and curriculum are included in the cost of tuition. Students should bring a snack for each day or spending money if they would like to purchase items during excursions.
The program runs weekdays from July 24-August 4 with an overnight from Thursday, July 27-Friday, July 28.
While there is no formal programming for local students on Saturday, July 29 or Sunday, July 30, local families are invited to serve as volunteer homestay hosts for international students depending on interest and availability; families who are interested in this option can apply to host on our website here.
Local students and their families are also all invited to a special farewell dinner the evening of Friday, August 4 to say goodbye to the international participants and celebrate the end of the program. The dinner will take place from 6:00-8:00pm in the HUB on the UW campus.
Curriculum: Global Leadership
The program curriculum focuses on three main topics: Leadership; Culture & Communication; and Global Citizenship. Students will explore what it means to be a leader, particularly in diverse cross-cultural settings; learn about different elements of culture and how to be successful in working and communicating with people from other cultural and language backgrounds; and build their knowledge about global issues through a real-world project to raise awareness for a cause. Workshops will be interactive and will include a variety of different projects, activities, guest speakers, and opportunities for discussion and dialogue.
Curriculum: English Language
Students who choose the English Language course will spend each morning in an interactive, student-centered English class that focuses primarily on building fluency in speaking and listening. Teachers are trained and experienced in teaching English to speakers of other languages and use a variety of engaging methods to improve students' language skills. English Language course participants will also build English fluency through collaborative work with students who are native speakers of English.
Global Leadership students will generally spend the morning in workshops, while English Language students will spend the morning in English class. On several days, the global leadership class will join the English language class for all or part of the morning for joint workshops on leadership or cultural exchange activities.
In the afternoons, both classes will come together to eat lunch and to enjoy a fun excursion. The afternoon excursions give international students a chance to experience the Seattle area and practice their English, and give local students a chance to get to know their international peers and practice their cross-cultural communication skills as they share their culture and region.
The group will meet on campus at the usual time (9:00am) on Thursday, July 27 and depart for the Pack Forest Retreat Center (owned by the University of Washington) near Mount Rainier and Eatonville, WA. We will spend the day doing fun and interactive teambuilding activities, and spend the night in cabins at the retreat center. On Friday, July 28, we will depart the retreat center and take a trip to do some easy hikes at Mount Rainier before returning to the University of Washington campus by 5:00 pm. More information about this trip will be sent in advance to registered participants.
After you complete your registration, you will be sent to a page with a payment link to pay by credit card. You can also open the payment page here. If you wish to pay by check, please make your check payable to FIUTS and mail to: Ellen Frierson, FIUTS, University of Washington Box 352233, Seattle, WA 98195. Please include the name of the registered participant on the check. Payment is due by July 7.
An overview of the daily schedule will be available soon. Registered participants will receive a detailed schedule prior to the start of the program.
Drop-off time & location
Each day’s program will begin on the University of Washington campus at 9:00 a.m. Students may be dropped off no earlier than 8:15 a.m. The specific location on campus will be announced soon.
Pick-up time & location
We will return to campus by 5:00 p.m. each day. Pick-up will be between 5:00 and 6:00 pm in the same location as drop off; parents will receive detailed information about each day's schedule. Late fees will be charged for pick up after 6:00 pm. Students may also take public transportation to and from campus with parental permission.

What not to bring
Because we will be traveling to different locations each afternoon, please do not bring items that will be heavy to carry or valuables that you do not want to lose. No tablets or laptops, please.
What to wear
Many of the program activities involve walking, regardless of the weather. All participants should wear comfortable walking shoes with water-resistant soles and dress in layers in case of rain or cold.
All lunches are included in the cost of the program. Students will eat lunch on campus with international participants. A wide variety of foods are available to meet various dietary needs.
The FIUTS staff members have years of experience working with students and implementing programs focused on leadership, cross-cultural communication, and global citizenship. During afternoon excursions, staff-to-student ratio will be at least 1:15.
For the afternoon excursions, participants will travel on Seattle Metro buses or in rented school buses. Participants will be provided with a pre-loaded ORCA card to be used during the program.
Entry fees to afternoon activities are included in the tuition cost. Students should bring spending money for snacks or other items if needed.
