Youth Leadership Program with Azberbaijan
During August 2012 and 2013, FIUTS hosted the Youth Leadership Program with Azerbaijan. This 3-week exchange program focused on expanding relationships between U.S. and Azerbaijani students, educators, and communities from differing ethnic, religious, and social groups and strengthening ties between the two countries. The Youth Leadership Program with Azerbaijan was sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and was administered by American Councils for International Education and FIUTS.
Over the course of two summers, 32 high school students and five educators from Azerbaijan traveled to Seattle, and 18 high school students and two educators traveled from Seattle to Azerbaijan. Participants in both groups engaged in activities that increased their understanding of each culture; developed skills and knowledge about civic rights and responsibilities; and gained a deeper appreciation for community service and engagement.
While in Seattle program participants engaged in the following activities:
* Homestays with local host families
* Visits to local high schools and service projects with local youth
* Workshops exploring the themes of civic rights, youth leadership development, respect for diversity, and community engagement
* Visits to Washington State cultural and historic sites
