Youth Leadership Program with Bosnia and Herzegovina
Community Service * Consensus Building * Civic Engagement
The Youth Leadership Program with Bosnia and Herzegovina will bring 18 high school students and 3 adult participants to Seattle, Washington this April for an intensive three week exchange sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State.
Secondary school students and teachers from Bijeljina, Bihac, and Orašje will participate in the thirteenth Youth Leadership Program for Bosnia and Herzegovina. Students and teachers will interact with American students, local NGOs, and civic leaders of Seattle. Through this interaction, students and teachers will be able to better understand the concepts of civic participation and leadership in a diverse democratic setting. Throughout the program, students will explore critical thinking, consensus building, and service as tools for advocacy and leadership.
The goals of this program are to enhance the understanding of democratic process and discourse, build understanding between program participants from different areas of Bosnia and Herzegovina, to empower youth to have a voice in the debates shaping the future of their communities, and to provide the skills and contacts for youth to conduct these projects in their own cities.
While in Seattle, participants will engage in the following activities:
- A personal leadership retreat
- Workshops and courses led by University of Washington professors, business professionals, and civic leaders
- A 2 day excursion to the Washington State capitol, Olympia
- Hands on cultural enrichment activities in Seattle including homestays, visits to high schools and recreational activities with American peers
- An educational and cultural field trip to Washington, D.C.

Program participants will return to Bosnia and Herzegovina with the intention to apply the knowledge, skills, and abilities gained from the program to directly benefit their communities. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, program participants will collaborate with at their peers to develop and implement their own community service projects.
