Frequently Asked Questions

FIUTS offers the answers to your questions about the ILI program here.

Who is eligible to apply?

You must be between the ages of 16 and 20 during the period of July to August to be eligible to apply. In addition, applicants must have an intermediate or advanced level of English language ability. Both Americans and international students are encouraged to apply. For more information, visit the requirements page of our ILI section.

What if I already live in the Seattle area?

We encourage youth from Seattle to apply for this experience. Local participants or international participants with local family members can choose to live at home during the program and pay the resident price of $1,500 or live in University of Washington dorms and pay the non-resident price of $2,200.

Can I participate in the ILI while I am taking summer classes?

Participants must be available to participate in all aspects of the program.  Students taking summer classes will not be eligible for this program.

How can I apply?

Submit the on-line application on the ILI main page.  Applications are due on April 30th.  Along with your application you must submit a $200 program deposit.

How can I pay the program fee?

You can pay online via our secure PayPal system using a Visa or Mastercard. You do not need a PayPal account in order to pay the program desposit.

Do you offer scholarships?

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer scholarships or financial aid for the FIUTS Intercultural Leadership Institute at this time. We do make every effort to keep our program fees as low as possible, and hope to offer scholarships to students in future years.

Do I have to participate in the entire program?

Yes, you must be available to participate in the entire program, traditionally from July 12th to August 1st. We will make special arrangements for participants who are observing Ramadan on August 1st.

How will FIUTS help me prepare for this program?

We will work closely with each student to help you prepare for the program. You will receive detailed communication by e-mail about program details, what to pack, spending money, and other topics before you arrive in Seattle. If necessary, FIUTS will also provide a letter confirming your participation in the program for visa application purposes. You are responsible for applying for your own visa, if necessary.

What will a typical program day look like?

Most days you will start with the group at leadership session on the University of Washington campus with a FIUTS staff member or guest speaker. In the afternoon, you will visit a local place of interest, meet with an organization and student leaders, or enjoy an activity that will help you get to know the Pacific Northwest.

If you have further questions or would like to talk with a staff member about this program please feel free to contact Alison Kilkenny, Manager of Education Programs at any time.  alison@fiuts.org, 206-554-9487
