Program Requirements

Learn about what it takes to become a part of the FIUTS ILI program here.

Who Can Apply

The FIUTS Summer Intercultural Leadership Institute is open to students ages 16-20, from any country, who have an intermediate to advanced level of English language proficiency. Both international and American students with an interest in leadership and intercultural experiences are encouraged to apply to the ILI program.

Acceptance to the ILI is a competitive process: the selection committee primarily looks for applicants who have demonstrated leadership potential, the ability to articulate complex ideas in English, and are interested in sharing experiences with peers from around the world.

Expectations of Participants

All applicants who are selected to participate in the ILI program are expected to engage fully in every aspect of the program, which begins on the day of arrival and ends on departure day. ILI program participants should also be prepared to:

  • Respect and learn from other program participants;
  • Share leadership experience and insight with others;
  • Speak, listen, read, and write on complex topics in English.
  •

    Visas and Immigration into the United States

    International applicants: If you do not have a passport, you should apply for one now.

    Please note that FIUTS is not responsible for handling visa or immigration issues - program participants will be responsible for all visa and immigration procedures. Participants should apply for their visas as soon as they receive notification of acceptance into the ILI program, as visa processes can in some cases take a lengthy amount of time. In the event that your visa application is denied, you will receive a full refund of your program fee, including the $200 application fee.

    Travel Insurance

    All participants in the FIUTS ILI program must submit proof of insurance before they arrive in Seattle. Student travel plans designed for part-time students are appropriate if they meet our minimum requirements. Participant insurance must provide a monetary minimum of $200,000 or more per medical condition per policy year, medical evacuation coverage (at least $10,000) and coverage for repatriation of remains (at least $7,500).
