Seattle Language and Culture Institute
The FIUTS Seattle Language and Culture Institute welcomes high school students from the U.S. and around the world to Seattle for two weeks of immersive English language instruction and cross-cultural exchange. International participants spend each morning in an English language class consistent with their proficiency level. U.S. participants spend each morning in workshops focused on cultural competency and global leadership. In the afternoons, FIUTS staff lead the whole group on guided trips to locations around the Seattle area for fun and educational excursions.
Throughout the program, international participants will be exposed to spoken English in daily use and will be challenged to practice English in many environments. Intentional cultural programming will introduce the group to American norms and customs and provide an opportunity for students to participate in American civic life through volunteer service and community events. They will share unique experiences around Seattle and have the opportunity to build friendships among and across cultures.
International participants stay in residence halls on the University of Washington campus and spend one weekend (Saturday morning through Monday morning) in a homestay experience, where they can get to know a local family, learn about daily life in the Seattle area and practice spoken English. (Click here for information about hosting students from this program for a Weekend Homestay.)
