Study of the U.S. Institute for Student Leaders in Journalism and New Media (SUSI)
About the Program
In 2014, FIUTS was selected to host the Study of the US Institute for Student Leaders in Journalism and New Media (SUSI), sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. The 2016 program will take place from June 20-July 25.
This program brings 20 undergraduates from Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh and Nepal to Seattle. While here, international participants study journalism and new media, and participate in volunteer and service activities, leadership workshops, and cultural excursions.
SUSI 2014 participants
Students stay in University of Washington residence halls and spend one weekend with a local homestay host. The last portion of the program takes place in Chicago and Washington D.C.
The Study of the U.S. Institutes promotes a better understanding of the people, institutions, and culture of the United States among foreign students, teachers, and scholars. Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) are short-term academic programs for groups of undergraduate leaders, educators, and scholars from around the world. Learn more about the Study of the U.S. Institutes here.
This program is produced by FIUTS in partnership with the Seattle Globalist, whose staff teach classes on topics in journalism and new media.
Students can get involved in the SUSI program by applying to be a SUSI Ambassador. Ambassadors are a critical piece of the program and act as peer mentors, cultural liaison, friends and student leaders. SUSI Ambassadors learn new skills, build their resume, make international friends and have FUN! You can apply to be a SUSI Ambassador here. If you have questions about the Ambassador program, please contact email@example.com.
SUSI 2015 participants, ambassadors, and hosts
Community members are invited to host one or more SUSI participants for one weekend. The Homestay Weekend is an important opportunity for participants to learn about U.S. culture and connect with local people. The winter 2017 homestay will be from Thursday evening, January 26, until Sunday evening, January 29. On Sunday evening, all hosts are invited to join us for a potluck dinner on the UW campus to celebrate the program and enjoy cultural presentations from student participants. Details about this hosting opportunity are available here. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to host.
