Early Fall Start (EFS) International Freshmen

Welcome to Early Fall Start (EFS) at the University of Washington! 2015 EFS classes begin on Tuesday, August 25th. International students enrolled in this program are expected to attend a compulsory day-long orientation on Monday, August 24th.

Early Fall Start (EFS) is an optional program for new freshmen who wish to begin their studies early and earn credits before fall quarter begins. There are a few important things you should know as an international student participating in the Early Fall Start program. To register for EFS, please visit Education Outreach's website- registration is now open. The registration deadline is August 20, 5:00 pm PST.

Arrival

International students may enter the U.S. up to, but not more than, 30 days prior to the start date listed on your I-20: September 16th, the official start date for all international students admitted for autumn quarter. Please make your travel plans accordingly and do not arrive before August 17th if you are entering the U.S. with an "Initial Attendance" I-20 form.

Early Fall Start International Student Orientation: August 24th

The compulsory EFS International Student Orientation held by FIUTS on Monday, August 24th will include required visa and immigration check-in for new international students and special thematic sessions to introduce you to student life in the United States and at the UW. You do not need to register for the orientation in advance, we are expecting you!

International students participating in EFS must attend EFS International Student Orientation to complete the International Student Service (ISS) New Student Check-In process. You must bring photocopies of your immigration documents to complete the check-in process. Go to New Students Post-Arrival Checklist for a list of documents you need to copy and samples of each document. Except for the admission stamp in your passport (or I-94 card) issued at U.S. port of entry, all required documents can be copied before you leave home! Remember to sign your I-20 before photocopying.

You can also make copies at one of the commercial copy centers located on University Way, or use the scan-to-print method at one of the Dawg Prints Scan Stations available in UW campus libraries (payment with Husky Card, or a Dawg Prints Card).

Housing

EFS participants are eligible to apply for Early Fall Start housing. For more information, visit UW Housing & Food Services.

You are also welcome to apply for the FIUTS Welcome Week Homestay Program. This week-long (7-10 days maximum) program is designed to give you an opportunity to make a connection with a local family. Your host family can assist you with airport pick-up and transitioning to your life in Seattle. The deadline to apply for a homestay is one month prior to your arrival in Seattle. You can find more information about the FIUTS Welcome Week Homestay Program here.

Health Insurance

International students are required to enroll in the international student insurance plan while attending the University of Washington. Keep in mind that the University's autumn quarter International Student Health Insurance Plan (ISHIP) begins in early September. It is recommended that students participating in EFS enroll in a short-term policy to prevent gaps in insurance coverage. Please contact the ISHIP office so that they can assist you. Additional resources to help address your health insurance questions can be found here.

Commuter Services: U-PASS

Students participating in the Early Fall Start program may purchase an Early Start U-PASS or parking permit.
