Fall 2017 International Welcome Weeks Schedule

All new international students at the University of Washington are required to attend a FIUTS International Student Orientation Session, during which you will connect with other new and returning students, prepare for your cultural transition to the UW and U.S., and complete your required immigration check-in process.

Freshmen and transfer students are automatically registered for their International Student Orientation Session when they register for their First Year Programs Advising & Orientation program. Freshmen participating in the hybrid A&O will attend International Student Orientation on the same day as their on-campus A&O day, Wednesday, Sept. 20, or Thursday, Sept. 21. Freshmen participating in a two-day on-campus A&O will attend International Student Orientation on Thursday, Sept. 21. Transfer International Student Orientation is Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2-5 p.m., Guggenheim 220 (please note the updated location).

Freshmen who participate in Early Fall Start must attend EFS International Student Orientation on August 20 but do not need to participate in another session in September. However, we encourage you to participate in additional International Welcome Weeks activities.

Matriculated graduate students must register for their chosen International Student Orientation Session. Please register as soon as possible. Click on the program date to register for your session. Options:

These sessions will be catered toward either master's or doctoral students, but graduate and professional students are welcome to register for any session that works best in their schedule.

Exchange students (both undergraduate and graduate) must attend the Exchange International Student Orientation Session on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m., HUB Lyceum. Exchange students do not need to register for their session.

Monday, September 11

Welcome Lounge
HUB Mural Lounge, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Stop by the FIUTS Orientation Welcome Lounge. This is a great place to bring unanswered questions you have about FIUTS, the UW and Seattle. FIUTS facilitators and staff will be there, ready to welcome you and your family (parents and guardians from home, and/or your American hosts) to campus.

Campus Activities: UW Planetarium
1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Throughout the week, choose from a variety of fun activities available to you right here on the University of Washington campus! The Planetarium features a 30-foot diameter dome, providing a unique opportunity to explore the night sky. Meet other students and FIUTS facilitators while exploring campus!

Tuesday, September 12

Welcome Lounge

Campus Tours HUB Mural Lounge, 12 p.m.
Campus Activities: Burke Museum
1:30 p.m.
Explore the Burke Museum, the Washington State Museum of Natural History and Culture.
Campus Activities: HUB Games
5:30 p.m. Try bowling, table tennis, and giant versions of classic games in the HUB Games area.

Wednesday, September 13

Welcome Lounge

Campus Activities: Waterfront Activities Center

5:30 p.m.
Check out campus from the water as you canoe from the Waterfront Activities Center (WAC). Please wear comfortable shoes for this event. This event is limited to the first 50 students at each time slot.

IMA Experience: Games & Sports
Intramural Activities Building, time TBD
Get to know the opportunities to be active through UW Recreation. Play soccer (football), volleyball, and other sports and games. All ability levels are welcome -- there will be space to learn as well as to compete depending on your interests!

Friday, September 15

University Book Store Welcome Event University Book Store, 1-2:30 p.m. Get to know the University Book Store! Enjoy light refreshments and get a free t-shirt while exploring the store and learning about where to get your textbooks, tech supplies, Huskies gear, and more.
Campus Activities: UW Women's Soccer Game 6:30 p.m. Wear purple and gold as you experience your first UW sporting event, cheering on the women's soccer team as they play Seattle University.

Saturday, September 16 - Sunday, September 17

Meet at George Washington statue, 9:30 a.m. Saturday Spend a weekend at an American camp making friends and enjoying fun activities such as forest trails, sports, campfire, dancing and more. Bring a sleeping bag, clothes, shoes and a packed lunch for a picnic on the way. No alcohol allowed. ($60, advanced sign-up required; sign up in the Welcome Lounge Sept. 11-15). Learn more about FIUTS Camp!

Monday, September 18

Campus Tours HUB Mural Lounge, 12 p.m.
FIUTS International Trivia Central Cinema, 5:30-7:30 p.m. or 7:30-9:30 p.m. Test your knowledge and win prizes at International Trivia Night! The more international your team is, the better your chances of winning. Food will be provided; bring spending money for beverages and your government-issued ID if you are over 21. ($10, advanced sign-up required; sign up in the Welcome Lounge Sept. 11-15 or 18).

Tuesday, September 19

Session for New Husky Parents HUB 250, 9 a.m.-11 a.m. Parents, guardians and family members of international students are invited to attend this session to ask questions about housing, visas, academics, social activities, local resources, and other topics. Enjoy beverages and pastries, meet representatives from UW leadership, connect with other new Husky parents from around the world, and learn more about how you can help your student to be successful. Campus Tours for parents and families will follow.

Resource Fair HUB Lyceum, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Representatives from various campus offices will share information about the resources available to you to guide your success at the UW. Find out about these important resources and ask your questions. Many offices will also be presenting information sessions later in the week (see below).
FIUTS Seattle Challenge Depart from Red Square, 1 p.m. Join a team to answer fun challenges in neighborhoods throughout Seattle. Each clue will be a lively and interactive experience designed to introduce you to Seattle’s public transportation system, distinct neighborhoods, local business, parks, culture, and major attractions. Sample coffee and snacks at local cafés, take photos with famous monuments, meet local business people, solve puzzles, and much more while making new friends along the way! Wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring cash or your Early Start U-PASS for riding the Metro bus.
Parent and Family Programs Tea HUB 334, 2-3 p.m. Your parents and family members are invited to come have a tea or coffee with UW leadership excited to welcome you to the University and the UW Family
International Welcome Party Centilia Cultural Center, 4:30-7:30 p.m.
Your official welcome to the University of Washington! Celebrate the completion of the Seattle Challenge or just join us for the party to meet other new international students and scholars. The celebration will feature music, food, and team awards for the Seattle Challenge. Parents and family members are welcome to attend!

Wednesday, September 20

Information Sessions HUB, various times and locations FIUTS International Student Orientation includes sessions, workshops and resource tours created to provide information on a wide variety of topics. Sessions are a great way to learn about the array of opportunities and resources available to you during your time in Seattle and at the UW. Session descriptions and schedule are detailed in the Orientation Program, which you will receive in your welcome folder at the FIUTS International Student Orientation Session.
Bed, Bath, & Beyond Shopping Trip Meet at George Washington statue, various meeting times
Bed, Bath, & Beyond is a home furnishings superstore. Join this shopping trip to purchase any supplies you need for your new residence hall room or apartment. Bed, Bath, & Beyond will be providing buses to the store starting at 4:30 p.m.; the last bus will leave the store to return to campus at 8:15 p.m.

Thursday, September 21

Information Sessions HUB, various times and locations
Seattle Aquarium Pick up your free ticket to the Aquarium (a $28 value) at the Welcome Lounge. Those that have a ticket will meet FIUTS Facilitators at the time indicated on their ticket to go with a group to the Seattle Aquarium and walk around the aquarium at their own pace. The  Seattle Aquarium is the ninth largest aquarium in the U.S. and exhibits a wide variety of animals including seals, birds, and jellyfish. Those that have registered for the Boat Cruise are able to walk to Pier 55 after their tour.
Boat Cruise Meet FIUTS Facilitators at the George Washington statue at 5 p.m. or be at Pier 55 by 6 p.m. sharp Go for a scenic harbor cruise aboard the Spirit of Seattle. Enjoy views of downtown Seattle, including the port and the islands from Puget Sound! Pizza and soft drinks are included! ($15, advanced sign-up required, sign up at the Welcome Lounge Sept. 11-15 or 18).

Friday, September 22

Information Sessions HUB, various times and locations
FIUTS Community Barbecue (BBQ) Gas Works Park, 4-8 p.m. Meet current students, community members, and other new international students and scholars at an American-style BBQ. Enjoy a game of soccer or frisbee. Families welcome! All food, condiments, water and sports equipment provided by FIUTS. Bring your U-PASS for riding the Metro bus. Meet at the George Washington statue to walk with a group or come on your own at 4 p.m.!

Wednesday, September 27

Wednesday Lunch, The HUB South Ballroom, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Join us on the first day of class for a popular FIUTS tradition, Wednesday Lunch! This free lunch held each month is a great place to see friends and meet new ones! All UW students, staff, and Seattle community members are welcome to attend.

Thursday, September 28

Host Appreciation Night, Kane Hall Walker-Ames Room, 7 p.m.-9 p.m.
Did you stay with a FIUTS host family for a Welcome Week homestay? If so, then you and your host family are invited to join this reception to thank all of our community volunteers.
