Meet the FIUTS Summer 2021 SUSIs: Brazil

FIUTS is thrilled to welcome 24 undergraduates from Brazil, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Russia, and Tunisia as part of the 2021 Study of the US Institute (SUSI) for Student Leaders on Education and the Future of Work. While this program usually takes place in person in Seattle, we are excited to host our first virtual SUSI this summer!

During the 5-week virtual program, the group will study the ways in which technology, innovation, and globalization are prompting the development of new initiatives to educate and prepare youth with the professional skills needed to succeed in the future. They will also take part in curriculum development seminars to prepare them to develop and lead trainings that benefit their home communities.

Every day this week FIUTS will introduce the SUSI participants from one of the six country groups that make up the 2021 cohort. Continue on to read more about the SUSIs representing Brazil!

Mariana Manso

I’m Mariana Manso, I’m 19, I study Biology and I’m from Brazil! In my University, my goals are: to study and find new techniques using biotechnology and microbiology to reduce the process of deforestation and environmental damage caused by mankind, and to study new drugs with potential to cure cancer. Because I believe that leadership and education are two keys to create a better world, I first started being a volunteer at AIESEC by promoting volunteer exchanges in poor areas in my city to reduce social inequalities. Furthermore, I am a member of my course's Academic Center and we organize events, programs, campaigns and study groups about the importance of creating our own mark on the world by changing our reality not only from inside, but also from outside college. Also, I write for Jornal O Clima, a newspaper in which we talk about politics, global warming and animal extinction in Brazil. The idea of the newspaper is fantastic because anyone with access to the internet has the possibility to read our texts about the current situation in Brazil in the environmental and political areas. Both of these experiences taught me that sharing my knowledge about topics I study brings a marvelous feeling, especially to the ones that do not have conditions or opportunities to go to school.

Henrique Pretto Etgeton

My name is Henrique and I am an undergraduate student of Environmental and Sanitary Engineering from Brazil. I am interested in several socioeconomic topics that help in the development of public policies for the environment and the management of natural resources.

Gabriela Campos

I'm Gabriela Campos and I am a Brazilian Law student. On my way of thinking, I am the product of a great tool as education is. Thanks to education, I’ve won two full scholarships to attend both high school and law school at institutions known for their excellence and concern for education, citizenship, and also democracy values. As their student, I was taught the importance of people mobilization for a better future in their country. Nowadays, I’m passionate about helping other young people (especially the ones from the low-class as me) by sharing information concerning education and how to access it! As I usually say, education and information are real game-changers in everyone’s lives and I believe I’m prepared to show how education is a good start to better understand not only our own culture and rights but also on a worldwide basis.
Besides attending 4th year at Law school, I work at a Law office (dealing with corporate law and legal proceedings) and enjoy my free time reading. To be honest, you always can find me reading (novels are my soft spots), so I think that's the reason why I am way too dreamer!

Mariana Lemes Diamantino

My name is Mariana Lemes Diamantino and I am 20 years old. I am from São Paulo - Brazil, and I am a physiotherapy student. I consider myself a supportive, patient and observant person. I am passionate about learning new languages and cultures, that is why I studied English and Spanish when I was younger. Furthermore, I had the amazing opportunity to be part of English Access Microscholarship Program, which provided me the knowledge about volunteer work, and I could realize how it makes the difference in society. Fortunately, I started to volunteer in my city in a day care next to my house, then, I kept volunteering when I moved to other city to study, and I was responsible for developing recreational activities in the pool to low vision children. In the end of 2019, I met about the Junior Enterprises, and I am part of the Junior Enterprise Movement nowadays. Definitely, my family and friends were responsible for positively influenced me.
