FIUTS SUSI Ambassador Application

ABOUT THE PROGRAM: From June 22 to July 21, 2019 FIUTS is hosting the Study of the U.SInstitutes (SUSI) for Student Leaders on Youth, Education, and Closing the Skills Gap in Seattle. This exchange program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, brings 20 total undergraduate students from Brazil, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Tunisia to the United States. While here, the students study the history and future of work, curriculum development, and leadership, and participate in volunteer and service activities, leadership workshops, and cultural excursions.

SUSI Ambassadors are University of Washington student volunteers who receive training and experience in leadership, planning, teamwork, and citizen diplomacy. Ambassadors are an integral part of the SUSI program and act as cultural liaisons, peer mentors, friends and leaders during the international participants’ time in Seattle. As a SUSI Ambassador you can learn new skills, have fun, make friends, build your resume, and support FIUTS’ mission to inspire cross-cultural friendship and understanding on campus and in our community.

Ambassadors will have the opportunity to meet and spend time with all 20 SUSI students, but will be matched one to one with a specific SUSI participant whom they will support throughout the program. Between June 20th and July 22nd, Ambassadors should be available for the following:

  • A pre-program training from 5-8pm on Monday, June 17th

  • SUSI Welcome reception from 4:30-8:00pm on Monday, June 24th

  • 4th of July Celebrations

  • A service project with EarthCorps on Saturday, July 13th

  • Final dinner and closing ceremony from 5:30-8:30PM on Saturday, July 20th

  • Bowling, a community potluck, roundtable discussions and more!

Ambassadors should generally plan to attend about 3 service, leadership, or social activities per week (most events are in the evening between 5PM and 8PM or on weekends and total 6-8 hours each week).

Please note that SUSI Ambassadors are volunteers. All Ambassador meals, transportation and admission fees during program activities are provided by FIUTS.

Please complete the information below, and contact Kailyn Swarthout, Education Programs Coordinator, with questions. Application deadline Monday, June 10th.

If you are selected but are not able to attend this session, we will contact you to arrange an alternative time for training.

The Study of the U.S. Institutes promote a better understanding of the people, institutions, and culture of the United States among foreign students, teachers, and scholars. Learn more about the SUSI at http://exchanges.state.gov/susi, and connect on Facebook and Twitter.
