Hi FIUTS family! My name is Nobert Kuvamudiki and I’m from Zimbabwe. This blog is motivated by the gratitude I have for the entire FIUTS leadership, the Department of State and the tax payers in the United States of America for directly or indirectly giving me the opportunity to be part of the SUSI for Student Leaders on Civic Engagement in 2019. I have no doubt that the program has transformed my leadership stamina for the better as I have since started working towards reweaving the social fabric of our society in Zimbabwe through various and notable initiatives.
I am delighted to say that, upon returning home the Zimbabwean team collaborated their SUSI projects and formed a student organisation called Zimbabwe Students Association (ZSA) which has since been registered as a not for profit organisation with the legal structures of the land. Since its formation it has managed to collaborate with various entities in programs that benefit students. The recent program that the organisation has implemented was that of providing cheap and affordable data for students across the country for them to access online classes.
I believe in the ability of young people to change the narrative of their future in political, economic, and social discourses. With that in mind, I have decided to support the HeForShe Champion having realised that the patriarchal system is still dominant in our societies and it has given birth to some of the political pathologies we are enduring as a nation. A change that involves gender equality would likely yield better results and might be the foundation of a brighter future for the youth. For the previous decades women have been fighting a solo battle when it comes to equality and this has to stop. Sober, minded men hold responsibility for helping to perpetuate gender inequality, gender-based violence, and sexual harassment. Therefore, they should be the ones who step up in solidarity with equality in all spheres of life, gender equality included, for the betterment of the entire world. As such, I have been implementing sporting activities under the banner of Female Students Network Trust (FSNT) in partnership with the US Embassy Harare in Higher and Tertiary Institutions of Zimbabwe. These initiatives were centered on debunking the patriarchal ideology which regards women as incapable to be in the echelons of power amongst young men.
I believe that the girl child has the right to be treated and be socialised the same as the boy child. History has proven that women can be better leaders than their male counterparts. The world is longing for a motherly hand that nurtures and cares. Therefore, it is prudent for this generation and the one to come to embrace the empowerment of the girl child and it is the duty of every father to ensure that happens.
SUSI programs promote a better understanding of the people, institutions, and culture of the United States among international students, teachers, and scholars. Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSIs) are short-term academic programs for groups of undergraduate leaders, educators, and scholars from around the world. Hosted by academic institutions throughout the United States, these 5- to 6-week Institutes include an intensive academic residency and an integrated educational study tour. Extracurricular cultural and community activities help to broaden the participants’ understanding of U.S. society. Learn more about SUSI programs here.
