GET TO KNOW OUR CULTURALFEST PERFORMERS!

"Events like CulturalFest help humanize different ethnic groups with one another and help us realize that none of us are each other’s enemy and that with each group comes a history rich with art, traditions, and lessons.”

Over the years, FIUTS CulturalFest has cooperated with many performance groups in the Seattle area with some of them as returning performers to help carry out the mission of bridging cultural gaps and fostering a community that celebrates diversity through art, music, and dance.

Taiko Kai has been applauded for the most powerful performance every year they participate in CulturalFest. Their gestures, sounds, and movements convey the dynamism and vigor of Japanese culture to the audience.

Luckily for us, they are back at CulturalFest for another incredible performance. Get to know them here if you don’t already!

Hello! We are Taiko Kai and we are a Japanese traditional drumming group (called taiko or kumidaiko) based out of UW. We were founded in 2013 by the Matsudaira sisters and are so excited to be performing at CulturalFest again this year!

Taiko Kai Past Performance

Taiko Kai has a long history of performing at CulturalFest and over time this performing opportunity has become a member favorite. We love performing for this event not only because it is a chance to introduce Taiko to a broader audience, but also because we love meeting and performing beside our fellow minority cultural performing groups.

At past CulturalFest we have aimed to showcase how dynamic and energetic this aspect of Japanese culture can be. This performance however we wanted to give a taste of the diversity in this art form by showcasing lesser-known forms, styles, and instrumentations in our selected pieces. This is important to us as it allows us to show that Japanese culture is complex, multi-faceted, and rich with varying traditions and subcultures even from within Japan.

As of this moment, we nationally and globally are experiencing many ethnic groups rising and unifying to fight against oppression. However, in these times it is often easy to begin harboring our own prejudices for our fellow minorities alongside our grievances to oppressors. Events like CulturalFest help humanize different ethnic groups with one another and help us realize that none of us are each other’s enemy and that with each group comes a history rich with art, traditions, and lessons. That we should love and cherish our fellow minority groups and hold them close as our allies and supports.

Taiko Kai comes back with a new line-up of compositions. Join us for a mind-blowing show that you won't regret!
