Faces of FIUTS: "The Marianas" in Brazil

Mariana Manso and Mariana Lemes Diamantino came from different parts of Brazil in 2021 to join a FIUTS summer exchange program. They quickly became “the Marianas”, two young women with a shared goal of creating real change at home.
Their backgrounds in Brazil shaped them even before they reached Seattle. Both grew up in communities with deep social and economic inequality. Both left their hometowns to study, and these moves helped them see the world with a wider view. Their time with FIUTS added an international layer. They met people from many countries, learned new ways of thinking, and found their own leadership styles.
After returning to Brazil, they turned their ideas into action. Together they founded United Women in Health, called UWH. The project began as a simple idea during the exchange. It grew into a robust organization that supports women who work or study in health fields.

Today UWH continues to grow. The Marianas lead a team of seven volunteers and two ambassadors. They organize online events, hands on workshops, and public campaigns that reach women across every state in Brazil.
During their time with FIUTS, they spent time clarifying the values that matter most to them. Empathy, social responsibility, and open mindedness still guide their choices today.
Today the Marianas are building a future grounded in leadership and gender equity. Their work reaches people across Brazil, and they continue to grow in their own careers.
We are proud of both of them, and we are excited to see what they do next.
