Bring the World to Your Classroom

Connecting Seattle area based university/college international students with the community is a central part of the FIUTS mission. Education Programs bring the world to your doorstep by providing resources and expertise in cultural exchange and global issues.

For K-12 teachers in the Seattle area, FIUTS offers many ways to enrich your global curriculum and connect your students with people from around the world:

Classroom Visits

FIUTS brings UW international students into K-12 classrooms, after-school programs, and senior living centers. The students teach interactive and personalized lessons about their countries and cultures. FIUTS coordinates the following classroom-visit programs:

Global Ambassador Day

The FIUTS Global Ambassador Day program brings University of Washington students into K-6 classrooms for a day. Each classroom hosts a different FIUTS volunteer, who leads an interactive lesson about his or her home country and culture.

The lessons are developed and produced by student volunteers with the guidance of FIUTS staff. Classroom teachers prepare their students with discussions on history and background information related to the country that the Cultural Ambassadors represent.

The FIUTS Classroom Visits Programs are made possible with generous support from the Center for Global Studies, Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies.

Pen Pals

The FIUTS Pen Pal program is a quarterly letter exchange between UW international students and local elementary and middle school students. Pen Pals send and receive 3 letters to each other over a period of 6-8 weeks. At the end of the program students get to meet their UW pen pals in-person on the University of Washington campus at a special celebration!

If you are a teacher and are interested in having your class participate in the program, email Nada Ramadan, FIUTS Program Specialist: Education Programs, at nada@fiuts.org.
