“CulturalFest helps widen our perspectives about the world we live in and allows for a greater sympathy for people different than our own which is what we need more than ever.“

Hovik Apinyan, Booth Captain of Armenia

Each year, we receive new applications for booth captains who are eager to share their cultures from unique and personal perspectives. Such new faces diversify the flavors of the cultures represented and allow students, families and children to learn about cultures from multiple angles.

This year, Hovik Apinyan is representing Armenia for the first time! Let's hear about his journey to become the FIUTS Booth Captain of his country.

My name is Hovik Apinyan from Armenia. I am currently a sophomore studying biochemistry at UW and a member of the ASUW, where we participate in the campus community as a democratic voice for students. I love playing and teaching chess and have an impeccable music taste.

I’ve noticed that the majority of people I’ve met over the years do not know about my home country of Armenia. When I first came to the U.S. this was a real shock to me as I was really proud of my country and culture. I have always wanted to represent my culture and make more people aware of the beautiful traditions and customs of the Armenian people.

As a Booth Captain, it means to be a part of a team, a team responsible for representing your culture and widening others’ perspectives.

This year, I am showcasing the Armenian musical instrument, the duduk. I have found that the sound made by the duduk touches the most emotions and the soul and reminds me of home. I want to bring this beautiful sound to and connect with more people.

I am so excited to have the opportunity to represent my culture and connect with others at the CulturalFest Expo. I think it is such an amazing event because it helps widen our perspectives about the world we live in and allows for a greater sympathy for people different than our own which is what we need more than ever.
