Faces of FIUTS: Meet Wedward

Faces of FIUTS is a social media campaign that collects personal stories from individuals who are part of our work. This week, meet Wedward!

Where are you from?

I was born in Maanshan, Anhui, China, a City of Iron & Steel. I lived there for 18 years. After that, I spent 4 years in Beijing and got my bachelor's degree, so Beijing is another city I consider a second home.

What's your FIUTS story?

I participated in the homestay program with FIUTS when I first came to Seattle in 2014. Since those first two weeks, my host mom Charlotte and I are not only friends, but have also gone hiking, skiing and many other family events together. Due to that unique experience, I also became a FIUTS facilitator in 2015. I met so many passionate staff and student facilitators, and together we make Seattle a lovely and inclusive community.

How will you change the world?

Start talking with my international student peers. Usually we start with discussing stereotypes based on our identities. Maybe it is boring at first, like introducing yourself forty times in a speed dating event. However, I feel bonded with other parts of the world when I discover the beautiful things we share, like compassion and love.
