Faces of FIUTS: Michael Wiem

Faces of FIUTS is a social media campaign that collects personal stories from individuals who are part of our work. During July and August, we will be introducing the 2020-2021 FIUTS Student Board. This week, meet Michael Wiem, CulturalFest Performance Co-Chair!

Where are you from?
I grew up in the western part of Indonesia, having spent most of my life there. In my hometown, there are only a handful of tourist spots. But like most cities in southeast Asia, cheap delicacies can be found in almost every corner of the city. When I was still in high school there, I already determined that I would continue my studies here in the United States.

What's your FIUTS story?
My FIUTS story starts off when one day I just walk into the old FIUTS office space in the HUB. I was interested in knowing what the international student world looks like here at UW after I served a role in an international student club at my community college. I thought I would leave the office with only a ticket to a FIUTS event on hand as a starter, but my curiosity led me to joining the first meeting of CulturalFest Expo Committee. I stayed there the entire time and had a wonderful conversation with the Co-Chairs and some FIUTS staff. That day determined how I have the position of CulturalFest Performance Co-Chair today.

How will you change the world?
Coming from computer science field, I will change the world using computers in some way. One way I am currently interested in is resolving the issue of electronic waste. I wish to be able to divert most waste from polluting the environment and make them valuable again with a little bit of software.
