Layla Jamil came to FIUTS because of dance. She performed atthe FIUTS CulturalFest Performance Showcase as part of Sevdah Seattle, a Bosnian Folklore group. “Ourgoal is to keep the traditions alive in our community.” Her parents are both immigrants, and she found a supportive space at FIUTS. “Being from a multi-ethnic family, I understand the whole cross-cultural experience, I wanted to get involved with cross-cultural understanding especially through leadership, to be a leader through FIUTS.” Eventually, Layla became a SUSI Ambassador was elected to join the FIUTS Student Board. “With the student board, weekly board meetings with diverse people really opened my eyes to different perspectives and my responsibility as a leader -we don’t always agree on things and that’s ok as long as we can agree to disagree sometimes. I’m the type of leader that likes to make other leaders, I work hard to set a good example.”
